HEALTH GAP BOARD MEMBER WINS $100,000 FROM JOHN M. LLOYD FOUNDATION

Contact:  Jennifer Flynn Managing Director, (917) 517-5202,

New York, NY:  Health GAP board member, Paisan Suwannawong and Karyn Kaplan of the Health GAP partner organization, Thai AIDS Treatment Action Group, have been selected as the co-recipients of the $100,000 annual John M. Lloyd AIDS Leadership Award.

Ott and Karyn are both extraordinary harm reduction advocates who have stood up to support the rights of drug users in Thailand and throughout the Asian continent.  Ott and Karyn both co-founded the Thai AIDS Treatment Group.  Ott was the founding chairman of the Thai People with AIDS Network and was a founder of the Thai Drug Users Network.

Karyn has fought for the human rights of drug users for over 20 years.  She worked with the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Campaign and most recently authored a book on Human Rights Documentation published by the Open Society Institute.

“Karyn and Ott are those rare individuals who live and breathe their commitment to the struggle against AIDS and for the rights of drug users.  Their unwavering passion and unparalleled brilliant advocacy strategies put them in a class all of their own.  Health GAP is deeply proud to be a partner organization of theirs.”, said Jennifer Flynn, Managing Director.

Karyn and Ott will be using their new found fame to publicize a global campaign for access to treatment for drug users and to denounce policies, particularly widespread throughout Asia, to torture drug users.  They are currently organizing a march on the opening day of the International Harm Reduction Association Conference in Bangkok, Thailand on April 24th to call on the United Nation’s Office of National Drug Control Policy to adopt life saving harm reduction policies.
